When Did SEO First Start?

How I define the starting point

Timeline notes for defining when SEO began
A simple timeline separates the practice from the label.

If I say “SEO started in year X,” I need to define what start means.

Some sources treat SEO as the practice of improving visibility in search engines, while others treat it as the point when the label “SEO” became common and the work became more standardized.

Those are not the same date.

For a broader read, I keep my own SEO article and search engines article nearby.

When I want a neutral history reference, I also look at Search Engine Journal’s history piece, which places the term around 1997.

Earliest documented practice in the mid-1990s

The mid-1990s search environment shaped early SEO.

If I answer the question as a matter of practice, I start in the mid-1990s.

Early SEO existed before Google and grew out of the way early search engines and web directories organized the web.

Search Engine Journal’s history piece also points to a 1995 anecdote about Jefferson Starship, which is useful as an early story but not something I would present as a universal industry milestone.

That distinction matters.

A story can show that people were already trying to influence visibility, but the defensible answer is still that SEO as a practice emerged in the mid-1990s, before the term fully settled into common use.

How early SEO worked

Keyword stuffing and directory submissions were common.

Early SEO often looked rough by modern standards.

Keyword stuffing was common, and directory submissions mattered because a listing could help a site get discovered at all.

The work was less about clarity for the reader and more about whether a page could be found, matched, and listed.

That is why the earliest version of SEO feels so different from modern SEO.

It was built around eligibility and simple signals, not around the broader content, structure, and usefulness standards that search engines expect now.

Why the date still matters now

Modern SEO is about understandability and eligibility.

I use the modern definition from Google Search Central’s SEO Starter Guide: SEO helps search engines understand content and helps users decide whether to visit.

That is a very different framing from the old keyword-stuffing era, and it is a better way to explain the field today.

Google also emphasizes Search Essentials and indexability, which makes the start date more than a trivia question.

The answer tells me whether I am describing the first attempts at visibility or the later moment when SEO became a named discipline.

What I answer when someone asks the question

SEO strategy notes on a quiet desk
A careful answer starts with the practice and the term.

My short answer is this: the practice started in the mid-1990s, and the term SEO became common around 1997.

If I want to be careful, I say the label became established later than the practice.

I also treat the Jefferson Starship story as an anecdote unless I am specifically discussing that origin story.

That keeps the answer accurate, simple, and defensible.
